Primal Beginnings, Contemporary Voices brings together two contemporary artistic practices inspired by humanity’s earliest forms of visual expression.
Drawing on ancestral memory, nature, and the enduring relationship between humans and animals, the exhibition explores how ancient ways of seeing continue to shape our understanding of the world.
Working across two- and three-dimensional media, the artists create an immersive environment that reconnects viewers with primal symbols, natural materials, and the creative impulses that first appeared on stone, earth, and cave walls.
Bibiana Huang Matheis revisits prehistoric cave imagery through contemporary mixed media. Her work explores the timeless human impulse to depict animals as storytellers, companions, and symbolic witnesses to our lives. Inspired by ancient cave paintings, she reimagines these archetypal forms in a contemporary visual language. She also paints markings on plastic trash.
Elisa Pritzker creates eco-ancestral art including found and repurposed objects. Rocks, wood, and natural materials become vessels of memory, honoring indigenous cultures, ancestral knowledge, and the spirit of place. Her work transforms everyday objects to ancient primordial traditions of human visual expressions – simple yet powerful, to celebrate humanity’s enduring connection to the natural world.
Together, the artists invite viewers to reflect on our shared origins, our relationship with the natural world, and the enduring power of image-making. The exhibition suggests that the first marks made by human hands were more than representations—they were acts of connection, wonder, and belonging that continue to resonate today.
