Artist Statement
Job 33:4
“The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”
This verse is the inspiration behind my artist book. When we think of our lives we can think of ourselves as mere ‘breath’, a vapor or mist that will soon dissipate. My series “Blackbody” reminds us of our human fragility in the form of flesh and proposes a futuristic post-human experience, a reunion with the cosmos, having an egalitarian experience.
The work consists of a dark sky enmeshed with celestial birds and whimsical patterning, all of which are deviant of gravity. The heavens are suggestive of the infinite while also representing a form of temporality. The night sky is constrained within a rectangular space, taking on the form of a scroll; signifying the biblical text, which describes the sky receding as a scroll being rolled within the last hour. Hebraic text is also inscribed throughout the work, a silent echo of ancient beliefs and a sign of an impending regeneration of spirit, freedom and restoration.
