Tilly Strauss

Tilly Strauss is a Hudson Valley NY artist with roots on a maple sugar farm and in art history. Her family is full of teachers, artists, curators, and writers and they inform her passion for making and creating opportunities to demystify art. Strauss has just returned from almost a decade of living and teaching in Miami and a semester of teaching art history in Zermatt.

She coaches other artists to show up, writes art reviews for the local newspapers, and is the Town Clerk and Vital Records Manager for her community. Currently, Strauss is working on an illustrated art history textbook that traces ancestors in her family tree that spans 500 years, from the early days of the Northern European Renaissance to the 19th Century American settlements of the Midwest. Her painting involves the discipline of daily practice and results in series that tell, in color and with whimsy, the big stories of living and bearing witness.

Tilly Strauss graduated from CU Boulder with a BFA in painting and a BA in art history. Since then, nearly a hundred exhibits cover a broad geographic expanse. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Barcelona Poughkeepsie Journal, Lakeville Journal, and Taconic Newspaper Group. She has been commissioned by MetroNorth Railroad for a mural in Poughkeepsie, and the Miami Parking Authority for two consecutive years of painted parking meters in the Wynwood arts district.
