Leaf Study: Fragmented, Bruised, Embellished

I have been working with leaves for several years and they are important images in my work. Leaf shapes and their changes during life cycles provide various ways to think about how leaves interact. In this accordion folded book with woven mat, I have explored bruised rhubarb leaves, a large leaf from a favorite house plant, and how a leaf can be given another chance by being embellished.

Artist Statement
I live on Cape Cod and the Cicada Brood XIV provided the chance opportunity for me to explore my interest in the life cycles of living things. After the female Cicada deposits her eggs on the branches of Oak trees, the tips of the branches wilt and die. This is referred to as flagging. I was taken in by the contrast of dying leaves as opposed to the living leaves. This book form, a dos-a-dos binding, shows the woven intersection of the brown and green leaves. Cicada wings are preserved under mica.
