The fantastic lives of 10 women artists
Last names are challenging early on, because many women artists changed their last names as they married, switching their father’s names for their husband’s, and some took on their own invented names. It complicates matters. Famous in their lifetimes, working against constant prejudice, these women defied the odds and then were erased from history. Some even had their signatures painted over posthumously by male artists! These women are just a teeny handful of the thousands of successful and driven artists that have been ignored or forgotten by mainstream history gatekeepers. Let’s get to know them. We will talk about the challenges, the survival techniques, and recognize the allies that helped these women make art in their lifetime.
Presented by Tilly Strauss
Each month artist and teacher Tilly Strauss will present a short slide show about a particular artist through the lens of her research and zine illustrations. Tilly majored in Art History and comes from a family of writers, curators and artists easily traced back to 1400s Europe. Making small art history zines is a project she has been working on for years. She is not presenting herself as an expert on these women so much as an eager student and she invites the participants to share following the slide show.
Included in each session will be a list of resources for those curious to dive deeper.
