Jo-Ann Brody
Figure on a Bench

  • Fossilcrete, metal bench
  • 46 x 20 x 18 (not including bench) – about 50 pounds
  • Bench sits on the ground (designed as outdoor furniture). Figure is attached to bench with braided cable wrapped around each thigh and a bench slat. The cable is fastened with a cable ferule. This sculpture should not need maintenance. The groundskeeper may want to rake any leaves off the bench and the figure.

Figure has a history of sitting around, in my studio on a chair as she became reality, on an outdoor bench in various parks, and in a tree on a farm. She is a welcoming figure, a rounded woman that invites visitors to sit beside her and talk. She is motherly; she listens. She hears you.

Brody is a figurative sculptor working in clay, cement, and paper mache. Brody’s work focuses on the female form simplifying and abstracting it to reflect her fascination with “She shall be a tree of life unto them,” and Gaia, Earth Mother.

She regularly exhibits at Ceres Gallery NY in Chelsea, with Collaborative Concepts at Tilly Foster Farm in Brewster NY and now Red Mills Historic Park in Mahopac NY. Her work is at NBOSS in Bennington VT, the Waubeeka Golf Course in Williamstown MA and in private collections. She has exhibited work at Hudson Valley MOCA, ArtsWestchester, and participated in Inspiration Arts “Address Earth” in Danbury CT.

Brody studied art in Portland OR where she graduated from Reed College and the Portland Museum Art School.
