Jo-Ann Brody
Outside/In
- Fossilcrete, stoneware
- 71 x 11 x 11 inches
- About 40 pounds
- Outside/In has a hole in her base, a piece of rebar about 4 feet tall is sunk into the ground about 2 feet and slides into the sculpture for another 2 feet. The base is covered with dirt but not buried. Galvanized metal stakes 12 inches long reinforce the base. Outside/In may require occasional removal of leaves that collect in the hollow/cave in her torso. She may also need the ground raked at various times.

For years I have worked with cement and clay but not in the same piece. Consciously I added clay pieces into my cement work. Clay is often a vessel. It is often functional with the outside holding something within. With this piece Outside/In and Gourd Woman I played with woman as vessel, inner content and outer shell that also is a deliberate volume and shape.
Brody is a figurative sculptor working in clay, cement, and paper mache. Brody’s work focuses on the female form simplifying and abstracting it to reflect her fascination with “She shall be a tree of life unto them,” and Gaia, Earth Mother.
She regularly exhibits at Ceres Gallery NY in Chelsea, with Collaborative Concepts at Tilly Foster Farm in Brewster NY and now Red Mills Historic Park in Mahopac NY. Her work is at NBOSS in Bennington VT, the Waubeeka Golf Course in Williamstown MA and in private collections. She has exhibited work at Hudson Valley MOCA, ArtsWestchester, and participated in Inspiration Arts “Address Earth” in Danbury CT.
Brody studied art in Portland OR where she graduated from Reed College and the Portland Museum Art School.
