“Crush” follows my “pattern” of using industrial grids in frottage. But I must admit its subject departs from some more serious undertakings. It developed due to an obsession I had at the time with the online game Candy Crush. I was fascinated by the horizontal-vertical movements of the game. I wanted the cross-hatching to capture a feeling of cascading in a different way from my pine tree cascade or “Raining Spring”. I hoped to have a feeling of movement in the end piece. It came from a sense of joy, of fun and relief.
