Papier Mache with leather stitching
Dog Walk Morning
Artist Statement
Every morning I walk my dog Nomi, just the two of us–around the block where I have lived off and on my entire life—past homes where I have known the families. Half an hour each and every day, rain or shine, through changing seasons, past flowers and trees. It is time to reflect on life, on my art. And then home agin. A ghosting on my ankles with is a welcome from my cat.
My book is a sculpture of six torsos with the spine a whole woman. Musings from my walks fill the pages. The colors reflect my surroundings and come from layers of Thai Unryu papers.
Matriarchy
All Brody’s work, book or otherwise revolves around the female figure. She has worked with books before in clay but this one is papier mache, lighter, more colorful, and less fragile. The book consists of 7 torsos and one full figure acting as a spine bound together into a book. The women in her family are matriarchal. Grandmother, Mother, Self, Daughter and Granddaughter. Each ‘page’ is a torso with the back containing writings about a family member. The back is another torso but on the inside of the figure are words about the children too young and mentions of son and grandsons. Artistic license has rewritten a few of the words but the book as a whole it is the musing of an 80 year old woman with a feminist bent on life, family, and art. The color is subdued in this essay, tans, golds, and red accents; the writing is in black ink.
