Leonie Castelino
Leonie Castelino, an American Contemporary Bojagi Fiber Artist, recognized as one of the three leading influences in ‘Bojagi’. She has broken the traditional rectilinear boundaries of traditional Korean bojagi to create works of flat and dimensional art with pieced fabric, jagged edges, curved lines, complex colors with the layering of fabric.
Her art floats off the wall or is suspended. Sculptures take on new ethereal forms, sometimes as cocoons, dances or on mobiles which may turn serenely with a passing breeze. Installations are an interplay of beauty, energy with movement complemented by narrative and social commentary – a constant dialogue that explores new ideas, techniques, and artistic interpretation.
Leonie’s work celebrates the strength of the feminine, some veiled on emancipatory freedom, history and achievement using the power of art to tell stories. Recent videos on textile embroidery traditions from western India and the hill tribes of SE Asia were mini lectures for Stonybrook University. She created a set for a theatrical dance performer in NY. Her wellspring of creativity is curating and collaborating with a sculptor, photographer, and a researcher on women’s issues.
Her work has been exhibited in prestigious juried group and solo fiber art exhibitions in international museums, and featured in several books and professional magazines, most recently in Ateliers d’art, Jun-Jul 2021 cover story on the use of color by 12 artists in different media from around the world.
Leonie with a MA, MBA, and corporate experience is pursuing her true passion in life through her art.
