Jeremy K. Bullis

Jeremy K. Bullis is a sculptor and world builder who is, through several distinctive bodies of work, engaged in imaginative play.  He sees his artistic practice as being not much more than a fun afternoon in the family room where, surrounded by characters, blocks, and other useful things, he can create a new civilization which is striving to sort out whatever thoughts are currently on his mind.

With the “Bullis Towers”, a three part series, he builds large and small structures that are used to examine and comment on the concepts of Fact, Faith, and Community.  In “Fantasyland” he locates past moments where beliefs rather than evidence were used to move forward.  Opposite “Fantasyland” there is fact, represented in the towers as “Experience”, which interpret stand alone, indisputable events as individual, monument-like towers.  The third series of towers are called “Humanity”.  These towers are outdoor, public works that draw attention to and compliment the surrounding landscape.

Secondly, he collaborates with his father, David Bullis, creating wire mobiles that equally present lines and negative space in motion.  Jeremy learned how to create and build at his father’s side.  Jeremy now carries on David’s practice, creating new editions of his mobiles as well as developing new pieces using his father’s unique language.

The third project is in many ways the first.  “The Peepkins”, character based sculptures which he has exhibited through installations, galleries, photos, and a book for over 20 years, is currently in production as a scripted children’s podcast.  In the tradition of classic cartoonists, any person Bullis meets may end up being transformed into a citizen of this world.  The podcast has given Bullis the opportunity to develop the Peepkins in new and exciting ways, including original music (with his writing partner Stu Jenkins) and stop-motion animation.

Bullis is based in Hudson, NY where he is the Artistic Director of Window On Hudson and co-founder of the 2econd Saturday Hudson Gallery Crawl.
