Ilse Schreiber-Noll
Schreiber-Noll was born in Germany and studied at the University of Marburg,
Germany. She moved to the United States where she studied Woodcut and The Art of the Book with Antonio Frasconi at Purchase College SUNY, Purchase NY.
From here she received her MFA and stayed on to teach in the Visual Arts Department.
Schreiber-Noll, a mixed media artist is a deeply committed advocate for Peace. Her work traces its roots back to the passionate writings of Bertolt Brecht and others, who spoke for the rights of the downtrodden. For many years she made woodcuts and Limited-Edition Artist’s Books, before returning to painting, and making unique, painted books. The heavily encrusted surfaces in her paintings and books include plants, sand and found objects in order to give a strong sense of physical presence and to convey the devastation of the land and the pain of the people that once inhabited it.
While her work is less concerned with beauty than with ideas, it transmits an undeniable sense of poetry and lyricism.
The artist presently lives and works in the Hudson Valley, New York.
